Slow the spread. stay informed

Variant is a COVID-19 information app that allows users to stay up-to-date on the latest protocols, information and changes that encompass the virus and its variants. It also provides all of this information in one, easy to use, consolidated platform.

The Problem

Users want the most up-to-date and accurate information on COVID. The problem they’re facing is looking in multiple locations for that information and not knowing if it’s reliable or biased.

The Solution

Provide an app that pulls the latest verified news/updates/regulations/and protocols into a single platform.

Responsibilities

Our Role: UX/UI

Tools: Figma, Miro, Trello

Time: 2 weeks

Proto Persona

She needs to:

  • Know the protocols and best practices to keep her mother and family safe.

Her goals are to :

  • Stay updated from a reliable source to make empowered decisions for herself and family

Interview plan

    • Conduct individual user interviews

    • Create survey to assist in data collection

    • Post the survey to our social media for data collection

    • How inclined would you be to start using an app with verified by the CDC - COVID related information, rather than reading about it or hearing about it from a 3rd party source (magazine articles, social media, friends/family)?

    • Have you ever looked for information regarding COVID for yourself or someone else?

    • On a scale of 1-9, How at risk do you feel when going out?

    • How important is it to know how many people in your current location may be infected with COVID?

    • How would you find a location to get a vaccination or booster shot?

    • Are you in charge of keeping vaccination cards for your family or group? Where do you keep them now?

    • (Feature List) What features would be most helpful to you for you in regards to a COVID info app?

    • Do you feel up to date on covid developments or would like to be?

    • 100% of participants have looked for COVID information regarding themselves or a loved one

    • 90% of those participants had to look in multiple locations to find information they were seeking on COVID

    • The majority of participants care for more than just themselves at home

    • The majority of participants do not feel up to date on COVID information

    • Overall participants find COVID statistics to be of importance to them

    • Majority of participants would like a mobile application that can provide up to date and accurate information on COVID

interview transcripts

  • Jeff

“I had to look at multiple places for the same information and all of it was so conflicting.”

  • Ashley

“I would love an app to have the information in one place. It's so annoying to wonder if what you're reading is even up to date or accurate.”

  • Tracie

“No, I do not feel up to date with new developments with COVID, but I would like to know if i felt everything was from a legitimate source.”

mapping

  • Affinity Map

After conducting the interviews and reviewing our survey results, we categorized the feedback into an affinity map

  • Empathy Map

After creating the affinity map we the developed our empathy map. Compiling our data this way helped us to then develop our User Persona.

User Persona

Elizabeth is a 32 year old 4th grade teacher and she lives in Charlotte, NC with her husband and children.

With COVID and developing variants on the rise, Elizabeth wants to:

  • Stay updated and informed on current and approved protocols

  • Ensure the safety of herself, her family and her students

  • Save time finding verified sources

    • Something the doesn’t take too long to set up

    • Products that integrate with other existing technology

    • Wants an app that has consolidated and verified information

    • Having to look at multiple sources for COVID information

    • Unable to verify the accuracy or legitimacy of the information she’s finding

    • Unsure of protocols and regulations are place from day to day

User Insight Statement

Users need COVID information approved by the CDC that is current and verified all in a single location.

Problem Statement

We believe that by consolidating current & verified COVID protocols into a single source for users interested in up to date COVID information will help users feel safe, secure, and informed.

Value Proposition

The Variant app is valuable because it keeps users informed on uprising variants and solves the issue of users getting misinformation and conflicting data from various sources. By providing the user with verified information in a consolidated platform, they can then be empowered to make the right decisions for themselves and their health.

User Testing Plan

We want to know what is currently working our app; if the interface design is friendly, easy to understand, easily navigable, and our users can accomplish all the taks we ask of them.

    • Login and create a user profile for the app

    • Navigate to find a recent news article/story

    • Add their vaccine card within the app for storage

    • Locate vaccine card and testing location on the map

  • We will conduct the tests and record/save the data. Our responsibilities are to go over the gathered feedback and implement the changes needed in order for future users of the app to have the most positive experience possible.

    • The testing will be conducted in quiet and distraction free environment to ensure the tests will be void of errors or issues

    • The users will test the clickable prototypes using FIGMA

    • They will report during testing what’s working, what needs fixing/updating, and what needs to be revamped completely

User testing results

  • Jesse

“I like the concept of having a digital version of my vaccine card. Navigation is simple and easy to understand.”

  • Karlee

“Super easy to follow and very easy to look at. I appreciate the minimal amount of clicks it takes to navigate the app.”

  • Patrick

“Some of the terminology used in the dashboard is confusing, and I’d like a way to search by state and zip on Protocols page.”

Key Learning POints

  • Terminology on dashboard was confusing

  • Wanted a way to search by “State” and “Local” on “Protocols” pages

  • Some users wanted an easier way to “Add” their vaccine card - wasn’t clear to figure out how

What’s Next?

  • Test again to check our iterations

  • Develop new, key features

    • Page for number of positive cases on state & local levels

    • Improved /updated map for/vaccine/booster/testing sites

    • Travel (Domestic and International) protocol pages

  • User tests on new features

  • Hi-Fi Wireframes for current and new features

Hi-Fi Mockup

Final thoughts

  • Listen carefully during user interviews. You’d be surprised what you think might be important to users, vs what they actually find meaningful

  • Start developing features and ideas for app functions after interviews are over

  • Collaboration and teamwork will help develop the best app possible

  • Focus on the research/data collected vs. going off your own personal opinion
